Eric Church Lyrics Make Country Rock

Posted on 30 October 2012 by editor

Eric Church is one of the biggest names in Country Music and Song these days.   His lyrics make country fans think.  His albums are selling platinum, and his radio songs are beginning to hit number one on a consistent basis.  The CMA Awards are sure to come.

Church didn’t have such a blazing hot start.  North Carolina native Kenneth Eric Church and was signed to Capitol Records Nashville he built his base at a slow and steady pace.   In 2006, when he was first signed to his record deal  he released “How ‘Bout You” to lukewarm response.  The country song with lyrics about good ole boy country music with a Waylon back beat and swagger peaked at #14 on the Country charts.  The other two songs released from his debut album “Sinners Like Me” stalled in the teens.

Still, Church was building a ground swell of fans diligently working clubs and doing dynamic shows that his core audience got addicted to.  The combination of lyrics with attitude and punchy production (thanks in part to the talented Jay Joyce) was beginning to gel.

With the release of  the album “Carolina” radio was slowly paying attention.  But only enough to get him a few unenthusiastic top tens.   The last release from “Carolina” was one that may not have charted that high but became a true hit for Church.  “Smoke A Little Smoke,” sounded different on the radio.  It got attention and became a signature song in rowdy live shows.

In 2008 he married Kathrine Blassingame and together on 10/3/11 they welcomed baby Boone.

With the length of time it takes for country songs to work through the radio system “Smoke A Little Smoke” was building it’s own fan base and peaking the interest of radio when it was time to release “Homeboy” another polarizing but dynamic song that had a viral effect on listeners.  The one two punch of Smoke and Homeboy clicked with fans and his subsequent release of the album “Chief” was explosive.

Chief debut at number one on the Billboard all genre charts.  A feat that gets attention in Nashville as well as the entire music industry.

The 145 thousand unit first week sent him to the “next level” in country.  The songs that followed “Drink In My Hand‘” and “Springsteen,” (a song touted by Rolling Stone Magazine as a single of the year in 2011 – before it was named as a sing) locked in number one status.

He has been nominated for five 2012 CMA Awards and appears on Jason Aldean’s new album Night Train in the song “The Only Way I Know.”

Church has announced plans to take time off from studio albums to instead tour and release a LIVE album in 2013.  His Blood Sweat and Beers Tour is already selling out large arenas and it’s clear that that the Erich Church story is just beginning.

Jake Owen’s “The One That Got Away” is already a big hit on the radio from his top selling album “Barefoot BlueJean Night”  and his new EP Endless Summer is tearing up the downloads and he’s ready to hit the Road with Florida Georgia Line on the CMT Tour.   But the BIG news these days for Jake and wife Lacey is that they are expecting their first child — a baby girl — later this month.

Jake says that his parents are very excited about a grandchild, “Yeah, my parents — as most parents are — are very excited about havin’ grandkids. My mom has asked me for years, ‘When are you gonna get married? When are you gonna get married? I want grandbabies.’ And I told her that it just was gonna be…it’s gonna take the right person, and I really never thought I’d get married, but a lot of things in my life have happened when I least expected it, and Lacey came into my life at a time when I needed it most — and needed her the most, and thankfully she’ll be here with me ‘til my dying day.”

“My grandparents are super excited about being great-grandparents, my parents are excited about being grandparents, and I’m excited about bein’ a parent, so there’s a lot of cool feelings goin’ around the Owen household these days.”

Aldean and Scotty Shocking Debuts

Posted on 25 October 2012 by editor

night train
Big week for country music on the Billboard charts as Jason Aldean and Scotty McCreery launch jaw dropping first week album sales.

Aldean was expected to post heady numbers for first week sales of “Night Train,” featuring the multi week number one radio hit “Take A Little Ride.”   The album walks in at #1 Billboard 200 and #1 Country with over 400,000 copies sold.  For Broken Bow Records – an independent label – this is akin to hitting the jackpot.  However Aldean’s talent and career development are a testament to the feat being mostly hard work and talent over any luck.

McCreery can also add a number one feather to his hat with the debut of “Christmas with Scotty McCreery” hitting number one on the Billboard Seasonal Album Charts.   He also will surprise many as next in line after Aldean on the Country Album chart.  McCreery is number 2 with  41,000 copies sold to kick off a busy holiday season of appearances (including one brilliant booking on QVC).  Blake Shelton also has a high Profile Christmas CD competing with McCreery.

Christmas With Scotty McCreery

Just last October McCreery solidified his staying power with an all genres #1 first week with almost 200,00 sold of his debut album “Clear As Day,”  (now Platinum).

Now all eyes will be on Taylor Swift as she is expected to break records with her unmatched launch of “Red” her fourth studio album.

Let the Christmas shopping begin.

What Everyone Ought To Know About Lady A

Posted on 24 October 2012 by editor

lady a

Trio Lady Antebellum has taken the music world by storm after their chart topping album and single release of “Need You Now.”

Back in 2007 they were a newly formed group looking for a name…After a photo shoot with the trio dressed in old time garb Charles Kelly stated “We had these pictures.. that I said had a neat Antebellum feel.”   So they added the Lady part and Lady A was born.

Female star Hillary Scott (daughter of noted songstress Linda Davis) met Charles through her agent (and a check of Charles and brother Josh’s MySpace pages) and a night on the town meeting that ended with a “lets get together and write.”

Scott was married January 7th 20012.

Dave Haywood and Kelly grew up in Augusta Georgia and spent most of their school life pals.

The first album, the self titled “Lady Antebellum,” was a quick radio success in 2007.

But it was the pop-crossover sensation“Need You Now” that launched them into a household name with first week sales of over 480 thousand copies and secured a win for Grammy Song of the Year in 2011.

“Own The Night” was released in January of 2011 and also won a Best Country Album Grammy for the group.

Haywood and Kelly also have songwriting accomplishments including the smash number one “Do I” that was recorded and made a hit by Capitol Records label mate Luke Bryan.

On October 22nd Lady A released “On This Winter’s Night.”  The bands first studio Christmas album.

Taylor Swifts Secrets of Success

Posted on 22 October 2012 by Bill West

Swift On Tour

Taylor Swift has sometimes been seen as an overnight success.   From pre-teen to CMA Award winner.  To music industry followers that assumption is relative.  Her first radio single (Tim McGraw) was released in 2006 and there was a lot of planning and set up years before that.

Swift, like all artists and superstars, has had her fair share of luck.  But Swift has parlayed those breaks into a multimedia success story and lifestyle brand that is as strong as Disney.

Swift attached herself to other great brands.   Country music was just a start.  She quickly release one of her first singles as almost an homage to “Tim McGraw.”  The song did well but more importantly it gave other country stars something to attach to.  Plus she shrewdly made the connection an event when she  performed the song on the Country Music Awards with McGraw in the front row.   On Network television she wrapped up the performance square in front of the star on the theatre floor and extended a humle introductio, “Hi I’m Taylor.”   It was not only a bold move, even risky, but it also created water cooler talk for days.    Showmanship at it’s best.   Swift was also an early opener on a George Strait tour that would put her front and center before some traditional country fans.   Later, on her 2012 “Speak Now” Tour she enlisted A-list stars like Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Ronnie Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, and Darius Rucker to further attach herself to other superstars (granted by 2012 her star was shining brighter than even her guests).

Swift has always made it a point to write what she knows.   Life as a teen and young adult was not a common theme in country music.  Still isn’t.  But the combination of honest lyrics and hooky arrangements made her someone everyone wanted to hear and relate to.

Taylor Swift RedShe is a total tease.   Yes, she admits her songs are about real breakups, relationships, and – gasp – celebrity boys.  But she won’t divulge the names or the details.  Fans get to comb over the lyrics and try to piece together the storyline.  It’s pop culture crack for a TMZ generation.  John Mayer, Taylor Laughtner,  Her latest Kennedy family romance (with Conor Kennedy) is the latest in her water cooler marketing happenings.  It has helped fuel pre launch interest in 2012′s “Red” album.

Swift is a social media maven.  She was an early adopter of MySpace and  Twitter where she cultivated a fanbase of millions. Almost 20 million Twitter followers at last count.

There is no secret recipe to Swifts success other than writing and composing important songs that stand the test of time.  That she has revealed as a gift to fans and has proven to be the most important tool in her pink tool box.
